I think that I need a new transmission because mine on my '92 won't go into fourth gear. I have taken it to two places, one a tranny specialist and they both want +$2000 for the rebuild and I really dont want to pay that much! Is there a cheaper way to get a tranny or are there places that specialize in just rebuilding trannys (like they do engines)?

Thanks.

a friend of mine had the same problem i believe he just threw in a WHOLE new one without rebuilding because it was only a little more. it costed him like 2500.

one is for sale on ebay for less than $400

thanks

Good call about Ebay. I may get it from there or from the site that they are from. Thanks for all your help guys.

The only a4ld tranny I saw on Ebay for around $400 (or that I would even think of putting behind a 4.0L in an explorer) is the one from Phoenix Hard Parts.

They always put the Tranny start bid very low.. but set the reserve at around $750. You can call them direct and buy one for the same price. I was going to use theirs instead of getting our rebuild (they are only 100 miles from Tucson) but I did not find good things about them.

All I found were complaints about the trannies being "quick" rebuilds off an assembly line. no upgrades and no where near as good as the original tranny.

If you can get the upgrades when you get the tranny rebuilt.. get it rebuild locally.. It will be worth it.

If you cant find a local rebuilder then you might try getting a rebuilt unit from ATK, or Jasper. Jasper being preferred by the few mechanics I know. The Jasper is updated and comes with warranty, may be cheaper than having a trans shop rebuild it- especially if they are not familiar with the A4LD family.
