Long story short I just purchased a 04 explorer 4x4 4.0L (07/03 build date) that was hit in the left front wheel. when i went to pick it up and drive it up on the trailer and later off the transmission would not engage properly ie: it shifts fine however you need to rev the engine up for it to seem to pop into gear and it will move then but then you get out of the throttle it stops moving. The guy i got it from said that they had to remove the driveshafts then they towed it and its low on fluid. But under the truck i see the driveshaft bolts up and the yoke is a fixed part of the transmission and wouldnt leak. I went ahead and checked the fluid and the transfercase was about 1/2 quart low and i filled that. Now on the transmission im confused i have read the other fill articles on here and still cant understand it. the bolt on the pan that has the 30 torx would be removed fully to drain the pan, but to just check fluid level i only need to remove the 30 torx and it should in theory be full to the top of the tube in the bolt? If thats the case whats all the talk about the fill plug on the side of the transmission if the article says to fill through the torx hole, or do i fill to the fill on the side. FYI the truck was not hit in such a way as to affect the transmission shifting and drove fine up untill the accident happened and the fluid is fine also. Thank you -ROB
