Hey guys, new here...of course. I got my brothers old 1991 XLT from him, and am in the process of fixing a few things and making that my Daily Driver.

Need to fix the tranny (OD is out)
Brakes (calipers are sticking)

Soon enough, it will be on the road again!

:D

Welcome to the Forum, and gl with your X. I've also got a 91, but the damn things been a money pit since I got it 3 months ago - bought it for 200, already sunk 2000 into it, and I'm putting at least another 200 in today...ah well :)

if you are interested in the milage possible, check out this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44372
(keep in mind the author, while able to get over 30mpg, has a SOHC 2wd X, while ours is a pushrod engine)

thats great mileage! what have you been getting? why the reason for all the money into it? mine needs a tranny, but I think I can get that done for under 500.... that, and the brakes (and 1 wheel bearing) and I should be good to go! Ha ha, btw, anybody in Orlando fl that knows how to do wheel bearings ? :D

I have some small plans for the truck...mainly to make it nice again.

my milage has been around 18, but I've got the pushrod engine(I believe that all '91s have it) which is a gas guzzler. As for all the money - ball joints, wheel joints, U-joints, shocks, brake lines, fan clutch, brake cleaning, oil change, air filter, trans flush, coolant flush...I think that's everything...it's such a long list, it's hard to keep straight sometimes ;)

I'm curious how the trans can be done for under 500...unless you've got a way to get a tranny cheap, and that's all labor(unless you do it yourself...)

I will be working for a place that does transmissions....I pull it, and get on of the other guys to do it...no big deal.
