How do I know if my 4.0 is the SOHC or not?

open the hood up and if it is the SOHC there will be a plastic cover on top of the engine that says SOHC. its real obvious so you cant miss it.

mine just says 4.0 EFI. Guess it's not.

Yup, you've got the tried and true OHV 4.0

Are there any known problems with this engine that I should know about?

keep up with the regular maintence and i've read from many she'll stand by you, the prefered oil around these parts is syn., but theres about a 1000 threads on why so use the search. welcome

Yeah I thought about switching to synthetic. Figured it would only help keep it in good shape. Since it is low miles (42k) I'd like it to last a long time. I think I'm going synthetic on my Mustang next time I change the oil in it too.

That is a very durable engine. I have 285,000km (170,000 miles) on it, no works on the engine. Just the lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends replaced and few other normal wear and tear items. A very good truck.

very good motor none of mine stopped I pulled the first one 236,000 and swapped in a 60,000 mile motor second motor had 232,000 when I swapped it off NO major problems

I just wish my 95 ohv got more than 15mpg =( Other than that, I love the engine and also haven't had any problem with mine in the short time. A friend has the same as me, 95 ohv xlt 4wd, his has 220k on his and still runs good.

I've got a 4.0 OHV, 172k miles engine is still runnin like a champ. Just replaced a few parts on it recently and did a tuneup. Recently replaced water pump, power steering pump, idler pulley (broke), tensioner pulley, plugs, wires, pcv valve, and AC compressor. A few hundred bucks in parts for the last few years of service without fail and when I need to go somewhere I turn the key and go without reservation. I love my X and promise to not neglect it so much in the future for it's devoted service. Seriously tho, it's a great engine, gets decent mileage and has been relatively trouble-free.

Matt
