Hello all, I just picked up a pristine 2002 Explorer XLT 4.0, any suggestions or advice?
Thanks in advance!

G'day and welcome. Check the service records to make sure they are up to date. If not I'd remedy that first.

How many miles ?

I would read through some threads in the 2002-2005 forum as that will familiarize you with some of the issues people are having as a lot of them are showing up often. That would be the stuff I would think about first, or at least double check. Being an '02, I'd be all over the tranny, wheel bearings, rear diff, etc... They're the most problematic systems...

Welcome!

Should be good to go for a while...

After doing all suggested points, the explorer is great. Then I was decided on a new battery and when I disconnected, wham--the 4x4 module. Got a new one yesterday from rockauto for 182 incl. shipping and installed last night, works perfect!

Anyone know a work around for this? I sure would like to know how to replace the battery without blowing the module. Especially with the weather right now.

I guess I won't be replacing my battery until spring!

Or take it to a dealer and have them do it.

Have a second vehicle or second battery nearby. Attach jumper cables from "spare battery" to the cables on your vehicles. Carefully disconnect the terminals from your battery. Remove your battery and place new one in and reattach terminals. Remove cables from your vehicle and you're done. I did this because I didn't want to reset stereo and clock setting. I'm at a lost as to why a module would blow because of replacing a battery. What happens when they built our vehicles new at factory and finally put in and connect the battery? Doesn't make sense.
