We have an exhaust shop here on Long Island and I like to join these forums to see if I can answer any exhaust problems that members have. Thank you for allowing me to join. Bob

Greetings. Exhaust questions are very common here. My first post ever on this site was exhaust related.

Enjoy. This is far and away the best Explorer resource on the planet.

Here's somebody looking for help: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246673
I have one question for you. My 95 has an O2 sensor near the catalytic converter. I get an occasional check engine light with a 172 code. My catalytic converter has 3 pin hole openings where I see condensation dripping out when I start it in the morning. Could this be the thing causing this code?

We don't have a computer scan tool (although we should) so I don't really know the codes and what they actually mean, most of the people that come here, their mechanics told them the converter is coming up bad or not efficient. But the condensation that is coming out shouldn't be what is causing the code to come up because cat converters produce condensation. In vehicles from 2000 up the converters produce almost all water and car manufacturers say that the exhaust coming out of new vehicles is cleaner than the outside air. I don't see how that's possible, but that's what they claim. Thank you for welcoming me to your group.

Thanks for your reply. The thing I was wondering about is that since there are small holes in the catalytic converter, maybe this is tripping the O2 sensor into thinking that the mixture is lean?

I've seen small holes in the stamped muffler Ford was using for awhile there, but I've never seen small holes in the cat's are they supposed to be there?

They are stainless steel, but I have seen them rust through on a couple of explorers before, not often though.
