Hi all, just joined this great forum after lurking for a while. Some great stuff on here and loads of info/help.I do need some help.My 2000 explorer has developed a "tapping" sound that seems to be coming from the back/lower of the engine.I have changed the oil, which has made it slightly better.Other than this noise (that gets quicker as you rev) the engine is A1,great oil pressure no other noises etc.Can anyone help shed some light on this please

Sounds like you've got the chain rattle... you need to get it to Justin in Newport. If you don't, you'll end up with a snapped chain and a wrecked engine.

If it's coming from the back, it's an engine out job, I think he usually does it for just under a grand.... I had his number somewhere...I know other people do.

Post up in the UK section and ask them

Welcome. I have found this forum extremely friendly and helpful with genuinely good advice. Much better than other forums I have looked through for other vehicles.

Justin's presently charging £690/£695 for full timing chain replacement according to his Ebay entry:

He did all four chains on mine back in March. He does a great job and is really good to deal with. It gives you serious peace of mind knowing that the chains are done and you've only the Explorer's other foibles to worry about!

If you have to travel a long way to Newport, the Travelodge in the centre of town is cheap.

Just had mine done by Justin, all chains at the price quoted above. also had manifold gaskets done as engine in bits + changing transfer case, rear axle oil. Well impressed. Took me to the station and picked me up next day. Even had one of his friends look out for me in the morning which was handy as my satnav said his location was a field!

I'd deal with him every time... but I'm in Canada now and Ford know what an Explorer is over here!!!
