2015 Explorer Sport
Hello everyone.

I have a 1999 Explorer Sport 4x4 (4.0 SOHC) with every option. I would like to know what the basic mods are for my Explorer. I am mainly a Mustang person but would like to put some basic mods on my Explorer even though it doesn't stand a chance against my 97 Cobra. hehe:)

I have read a couple of posts and I have some questions on typical simple mods.

Should I get the KKM intake or do the standard K&N drop-in?

Should I get an entire catback or just weld in a muffler?
- If just a muffler, then what are the diameters of the stock exhaust pipes?

Has anyone tried Dynomax Race Magnums or Borlas? I am not into chambered mufflers like Flowmasters because of the drone associated with them, so I would like to get a straight-thru design muffler.

Does anyone make an aftermarket h or x pipe with hi-flow catalytic convertors? I know this mod is more mustang related but I am not sure what they call this section of the exhaust on the Explorer.

Does anyone make any headers for the 4.0 SOHC?

How about nitrous or superchargers?

Any other routine mods?

At least I don't have to do gears on this one due to the fact that it has 4.10's already.:)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am sure I will be asking more questions.

Thanks, Jason

Anybody out there?

Jason-I don't know what's out there for your Explorer since its a '99 and mine is a '91, but you might check either Summit Racing or Jegs out for parts. They can tell you if they have anything that will fit you year. I went with a K&N filter and a modified airbox because I was already using it before I modified the airbox. I personally think its the way to go. It'll be only half the price of going with a KKM or K&N aftermarket set up. I also installed a set of Borla headers, a Superconverter and Ultra-flo SS straight through muffler. I had a local exhaust shop custom bend the 2.25 inch piping from the cat back. It ran me $110 for the installation of the muffler, cat and piping. I really haven't done much else to it except added Splitfire Twin cores and Bosch P+4. On the handling side I installed Rancho RS5000s and a Rancho steering stabilizer. All said and done, I am enjoying the performance. Its no Cobra or Mustang GT by any means, but its a hell of a lot more fun to drive than before. Hope this helps.

I don't have a 4.0 SOHC but I do have a 1999 5.0 and I put on the Borla Cat-back, K&N drop in air filter, modified airbox and Jet Chip.

Unless you have a really good friend whose a mechanic or you do the job yourself, you won't be able to change your cat due to emission regulations. It has to be a certain number of years old or it must be damaged in order to replace it.

Jason, check out Vanir Technolgies. He lists a Nitros kit for our motors. There's a link from the Explorer Resources section of this board. Good luck...
