I understand there is an issue with the offset and rubbing occurs. Can I circumvent this with small spacers?

Yes I have already done that. I have 2007 explorer rims on my 2001 sport trac. 1.5 inch spacers

No issues with 1.5" spacers? Those kind of spacers tend to get a bad rep around here. I was thinking like 1/4" - does anyone have the details on the offset of the newer Explorer rims?

I found a set of Jeep Grand Cherokee rims that fit no problem on a 2nd gen Explorer.
