Newly Installed KKM....Questions

You can add all the intake ya want... but if it doesn't have any where to go (cat back exhaust) it's not gonna be as big of a benifit

True true. I've just got a weak little glasspack on there right now that ran me all of $30.

The glasspack is probably what's hurting ya, go with a good quality muffler like Flowmaster, Magnaflow, or Borla and a 2.25" tailpipe. I'd suggest the 66mm BBK TB, especially if you're planning on getting a chip. It won't be too big if you have good intake and exhaust.

When you reset the computer, let it idle for 10 mins before you drive it. When you're driving you can turn stuff on, just don't have anything while it's sitting there running.

yeah, seriously no glasspack. my friend put one on a 4.0 ranger and the thing ran like a 4 banger from then on.

Does everyone else get a whining kind of sound with the KKM from around 2K-4K RPM?
It probably still does whine after 4K RPM but the engine is so loud at that point that I can't hear it.

mine is loud as hell, but its not the same as yours. with my fipk and homemade cold air system, my truck sounds like a spaceship or something (intake) being chased by a very angry -insert something clever here, my brain is shot- (exhaust)

After really driving with the kit today, I've decided that I like it. I get to test it out some more today. I heard that if you spray water on a glasspack, all of the glass will break inside and it will be even louder. Any truth to that?

broken particles in a muffler will probably not create the kind of loudness you want. however, that might work if you got the muffler hot enough first.

:) I'll jump in since I installed the KKM on Saturday. I have the 5.0 litre, so it is probably a little different. The supplied bracket fit into an existing hole on the radiator support. You need small fingers to hold the nut inside the support until you get it threaded. No plastic ties needed. Also, there is a piece of plastic behind the headlight that you can take out to improve airflow. It is only held in by one screw and it is self explanatory when you see it. I picked this up from an old post. No one mentioned how tough the airbox is to get out. The instructions said to pry with a screwdriver, but there is no room to get anything under the airbox to pry. I finally pulled it out, but it definitely takes 2 hands. I haven't noticed any change in sound level, the big test will be on mileage. I got 17.5 mpg on all highway driving on Friday. I will post the mileage after my next highway trip. Next up is a flowmaster 50 dual in/ dual out and custom dual exhaust pipes. The local shop says $170 installed.

I guess this is just me, but I actually lost mileage with my KKM. My engine has had absolutely no mods except for the KKM, and before it I could get 250 miles with a tank, and now I'm down to like 230.

I know on my 92 the stock factory exhaust was 2.25, might want to verify that on yours, all you may need to do is stick a decent muffler in there and save yourself the extra cost of new tubing. On the flip side the stock exhaust on my 93 is only 2in.

i guess im one of the few people that really loves their KKM kit.

i notice a decent power change, especially throttle response and a lot more pick up when im cruising on the highway or whatnot. ive also noticed a slight gain in MPG, nothing spectacular, only a 2-3 MPG gain, but a gain none the less.

hey buckey... you said you got a quote for dual exhaust for $170? does that include the muffler?? mine was $400 for the flowmaster 50 and dual pipes out... and that was the lowest price out of 4 places. if you live down south that might be a reason. also a few posts back someone said something about a whining coming from the KKM. mine makes a high pitched whistle when i step on the gas a little while moving. if im just crusing in dont hear it but when i press the pedal a little more i hear it but if i push it far then it doesnt do it. anyone have any ideas what this is. if its just the airflow then im not worried but if it could be a little leak in the connection then ill have to see about fixing it.
thanks guys.

Don't get me wrong. I love the KKM. I noticed an instant increase in power, and the Ex sounds so badass now. I just lost mileage, that's all.

I drove a lot today but I used up more gas then I usually do. I don't know if I was just driving hard or what. I took a trip to the next town too and used a little bit more gas than usual. I'm usually on a fill up a week schedule so I will see how that works out.

Could it be that only people with good mufflers and exhaust systems gain mileage?

this question has nothing to do with the thread but im just wondering why some people have one explorer under their name and others have none and some people have more than one. its just been bugging me.

It goes by how many posts you have, not sure what you get for what though.

Mileage may be slipping cause you like to rev it up to hear the sound, happens to most people, and the 4.0 can be a little thirsty when driven hard.

That IS probably what is happening. I know I've been revving mine in just the past day to show it off hehe. I need to just chill out. I did the same thing when I got my glasspack and I'll do the same thing when I get my Flowmaster.

What all does the cat back exhaust include? Just a muffler and tailpipe?
