newly used 98 mountaineer

I bought a 98 mercury mountaineer with 156000 miles. I would like to know what should i do such as maintenance if suppose the vehicle was not maintained.

Change; engine oil & filter, air filter, transmission oil and filter, rear end gear oil, grease any zerk fittings, lube the door latches and hinges. That will keep you busy all day. While you are at it, check the shocks, brake pads and rotors.

I also forgot , lube the hood latch mechanism. And while you have the hood open, you just as well pull the throttle cables off the throttle body and lube them too.

If its a 4.0L SOHC V6, its probably time for timing chain replacement too.

Plugs and wires are always a good maintenance item if you don't know the history.

Also, clean the MAF and maybe the IAC. Easy, simple and fast maintenance items.
