Hi.
I have a 97 Explorer Control-Trac (yeah, there's the problem right there). I know how I messed up the tranny, but I'm not sure how messed up it is. My t-case was doing the thing all 97's do (stay engaged in 4 high), so I do the thing you're not supposed to do with an auto tranny... ...go from Drive to Reverse rather quickly and repetively at probably too high of an RPM, and there goes 1st. The vehicle still moves and shifts fine starting out in 2nd and then shifting to drive. OD works fine as well as reverse. Another thing is that when coming to a stop, and manually downshifting, the tranny does catch in first (evident by the engine rpm, and feeeling it grab 1st), but it just won't grab on acceleration. Is this a symptom of a problem in the valve body, or is it a total rebuild? The fluid doesn't smell burnt (and I've been driving it like this for a year now). I think I want to tackle this problem first, then go through all the threads on the horrors of the 97 Control-Trac T-Case after. UUUUUGHHHHH.. oh yeah, I think the rearend is whacked too, but one thing at a time.
oh yeah, another idea (probably idiotic from what I know about the numerous changes that the Explorer has undergone throughout the 90's) is I have a line on a 95 that took a good hit in the rear. I was toying with the idea if swaping out the tranny/t-case and rear end )and heck, while I'm at maybe the engine... roughly the same milage but he maintained it religiously. I can grab it from him for about $1,000. The body's trashed and the interior has seen better days, but mechanically sound. Any ideas what I'd be getting myself into with this idea... I hear the can of worms opening as I type...
