97 control-trac
Hi.
I have a 97 Explorer Control-Trac (yeah, there's the problem right there). I know how I messed up the tranny, but I'm not sure how messed up it is. My t-case was doing the thing all 97's do (stay engaged in 4 high), so I do the thing you're not supposed to do with an auto tranny... ...go from Drive to Reverse rather quickly and repetively at probably too high of an RPM, and there goes 1st. The vehicle still moves and shifts fine starting out in 2nd and then shifting to drive. OD works fine as well as reverse. Another thing is that when coming to a stop, and manually downshifting, the tranny does catch in first (evident by the engine rpm, and feeeling it grab 1st), but it just won't grab on acceleration. Is this a symptom of a problem in the valve body, or is it a total rebuild? The fluid doesn't smell burnt (and I've been driving it like this for a year now). I think I want to tackle this problem first, then go through all the threads on the horrors of the 97 Control-Trac T-Case after. UUUUUGHHHHH.. oh yeah, I think the rearend is whacked too, but one thing at a time.

oh yeah, another idea (probably idiotic from what I know about the numerous changes that the Explorer has undergone throughout the 90's) is I have a line on a 95 that took a good hit in the rear. I was toying with the idea if swaping out the tranny/t-case and rear end )and heck, while I'm at maybe the engine... roughly the same milage but he maintained it religiously. I can grab it from him for about $1,000. The body's trashed and the interior has seen better days, but mechanically sound. Any ideas what I'd be getting myself into with this idea... I hear the can of worms opening as I type...

oh well, I think I'm gonna buy the farm and grab that '95 (he's anxious to unload it, and try to swap the drivetrains out. If the tranny problem with my 97 was simply the VB, I'd attempt it, but I just need to make a move on this while I have a couple of bucks in my pocket. I'll keep ya posted on my progress (or de-gress, which ever comes first  ).

I am going to guess you crapped out a one way sprag.

Well, according to the shop, you nailed it!! (yeah, I caved and brought it to a tranny guy instead of trying to mix and match the 95. I just know that would have turned out to be a disaster and I would have ended up with two explorers in the driveway that didn't work) I was hoping beyond hope that it was something with the VB, so $2,400 later, I'll have a tranny (ouch, seems pricey. I've had this done before at another shop on a previous explorer a few years back and I swear it was a lot less $$... I wish the 'ole girl was in worse shape so I could have just scrapped it). Now onto the rear end. It's whacked for sure, and again, I'm hoping beyond hope that once it's put back together right, maybe We'll find this was the cause of the Control Trac issues (I know, wishfull thinking). Again, he's whacking me for $550 just to open it up... that seems like an awfull lot of dough... I just hope all he has to do is replace the frictions the right way and maybe the spider gears (I don't want to hear that the ring and pinion are gone... grrrrrrrrr). If I wasn't fixing this thing for my wife and baby to use as their around town ride it'd be one thing, but I need this done right, and it seems that Auto trannys and locking rear ends are just outside of this shade tree mechanic's shadow :( . I will say this though.... Kudos to this site guys! It's a great resource for these SUVs and the detail that goes into things like the VB rebuilds gives me at least some incentive that if I needed to do one of those, I probably could manage. Thanx for at least taking some of the mystery out of automatic transmissions, and brown wires, etc... I'm glad I ran across this site because it's really the only site I've seen that actually has real deal answers. Thanx again (I still feel like the tranny guy's soaking me, but at least it'll all be fixed... sometimes that's all one can ask for).

Tom.

Well, there's good news and bad news... I made it through the tranny AND transfercase for about $2,700, so I can't really complain about that. Now the rear end... From what the mechanic said, it sounded like the whole thing just about ran out of the case with the Lube when he popped the cover :p ... I knew it was pretty spent though so no suprise there. I'm hoping to hear from him today or tommorrow to pick her up. I'm guessing that the rear end will take me for about $1,000 to $1,500, but at least then it'll be done right. I will say again though, this is a great source of info, with a lot of expertise hanging around here. I'm glad I found this place, as I'm sure I'll be in another Ford at some point in the future!

Thanx again. Tom.
