I have a1996ford ranger automatic 4.0 4x4.Every gear works except 1st. I pull out in 2nd then put the shifter in drive and its fine until i have to stop at which time i have to drop it down in 2nd to get moving again .Reverse also is fine. I read that other guys had idenical problem and was hoping somebody figured out how to fix it.Thank you very much for any help or ideas on correcting my problem.Also read to check fuse #27 but it was good
Okay, your 96 4.0 Ranger should have a 4R55E trans.
First, hows the fluid level? Fluid color?
Did this problem just start?

As @RangerX mentioned check the basics first. The symptoms you described are what would expect when the OD sprag fails but that usually will effect reverse also. Is the OD light flashing?
