ok, heres the problem. My truck has been not wanting to go foward when I put it in gear. It will back up just fine, hot or cold it backs up with out a problem. But like I said it won't do anything in drive. The other night it went in to drive but I had to let it roll down a hill, put it in gear, and rev the motor and it finally went into gear, but it wouldn't want to stay in gear unless I gave it a little gas to hold it in gear. If I let off the gas it will slip out of gear but when I give it gas it revs up then pops into gear like I was neutral droping it. Anyways its sitting in my garage with the transfer case on the floor. I'm gonna clean the governer valve, and I have a question about that. Is it suppose to stay pulled in or pushed out? When I pulled the transfercase out and looked at the valve and it was just laying on the shaft. Is this right? I have to go to work Sat. but it needs to be out of the garage by Fri morning, is there any hope for me? I think my transfer case is crapin out to, I'm thinkin of just making it a 2WD if thats posible, is it?

Thanks in advance,
-Cody

The centrifical weight just sits there. The outward force of weight is balanced against the presure on the valve. weight-spring-valve-body

Have you tried it in manual low and D? D and OD are different in first. Problem is either forward clutch or OD one way clutch.

how is the fluid?

I've pulled it down throught every foward gear and I get no movement in any of them. The only time it gives me anything (besides reverse) is if its rolling and I pull it all the way down into 1st on the shifter and then all it does is kinda sound like a binding/dragging/tugging in the tranny. It's kinda been weird, b/c the times when it did move forward on its own has been when I add more fluid to it. I'll add a little and it will drive around like nothing was ever wrong, but after it sits, it does the same thing all over again. I can't figure this thing out and if I need a tranny I'm gonna snap. Is there anyway to fix this problem without having to drop the tranny/transfer case?

is this the original tranny cause if it is you are blessed to get 216000 miles out of it

Just changed the filter, and fluid like three days ago.

And did it start with the new filter? Sounds like the pump is sucking air from the filter not being all the way up or missing the O rings. If you used the newer style plastic filter, it needs a spacer added because the bolt will bottom out. I'd drop the pan again before you play any more footsie with the gas. Otherwise you will need a rebuild.

don't forget the O-ring. It certainly sounds like no or very low hydraulic pressure. When the fluid is low or there is otherwise compromised control pressures, the Ex will often do fine in reverse, but not the forward gears - I cannot say why, I just know from first hand experience it's true. If it was fine before the new filter...99 times out of 100 you made some installation errors. They are easy mistakes to make, so don;t feel bad, and hope that's it!

Well when I put the filter in after that the only time it would move was when I had added fluid, but not after it sat for a little while. I did notice something though, the old filter had a round pickup, and the new one was rectangler. I just figured that it was a new style filter and it might be better or something. But what kinda spacer are yall talking about? I put the o-rings on, and put the bolt with the little spacer on and bolted it up. But I didn't add anything that didn't come with the kit. Does this all sound right to yall? And what is this little spacer that yall were talking about? Thanks for anything.

You took off a good filter and put on the old style crappy metal screen one. You should have asked for one for a 97. Some of the new filters come with a large fender washer or a metal spacer. The metal screen filter you bought will let particles through that will clogg the valve body. New fluid always gets them out of the places they were trapped.

Are you checking fluid levels with the engin running? How many times have you added this extra fluid to get it going?fluid
