no forward or reverse on 03 explorer

drove home heard a clunk about 200yrds from my home. parked in my driveway. next morning I started my engine and there was no drive. no forward gears and no reverse. checked trans oil level. The oil is cold even with engine running. \\can anyone tell me what happened. or what can be done. \thanks to all in advance. nekus:

The fluid will take some time before it gets hot, the main thing here is the fluid level, if the fluid level is full and there is no engagement it makes me think the pump has a problem.

If you check the fluid level with the engine off and make a note of where it is on the stick and then check the level with the engine running, the level should drop with the engine running. This can show if the pump is even working.

If this has a transfer case the problem may be there, you would lose park also.
