No luck with a fuel filter removal

Try the 5/16" ring? That's what worked on my '97.

If you slide it in, you should hear/feel a faint click. Once it clicks, keep pressure on the plastic ring and pull the flexible part of the fuel line off.

THanks
Yep, we thought of that but squeezed under the car getting it on was even tougher, felt it was time to wrap it up for the day and get the car on a lift. I will try both clips next time it is airborne.:salute:

Ok,
well its all clear to me now.....? Maybe not so much. First things first, the fuel filter. Then I will call a meeting of the two gentlemen from the previous page(s) and we can have some beers in the White House Rose Garden, should smooth everything out.

Good one. :p:

i used to see 50-70 weekly vehicles for 171/174 and 1/2 of them had lol brand new o2s never fixed it.

but i know you know better, the auto zone dude told you. yet i think i even copied out of the ford pc/ed everything that can cause a p0171/p0174 and your still too stupid to understand that o2 will not set a p0171/p0174.

and recent flavor of the month is 1151... which is an o2.

So because the Ford book says an O2 can't cause a P0171 or P0174, that means GOD himself says so??

Once again it is rare but it can happen; an O2 sensor that does not read properly can cause an engine to run lean/rich in either bank 1 or 2 and that will cause a P0171 0r P0174 code.

yes, they wrote the program they wrote the drive train, if it could of caused it, it would be listed as a possible cause of a p0171/p0174

the fact you set a p0171,p0174 proves the o2's are fine.

you keep arguing a fact that you are 100% wrong.

this is the argument is plain english.

my direct tv does not work.

and you reply my verizon fios is down.

it has nothing to do with direct tv.....

do you understand now?

its apples and oranges.

I could never force the tool deep enough to release the garter spring. I finally used a large pair of pliers to squeeze the tool into the fitting and could feel the spring release.. and the filter pop right off..

you put the tool into the connector, then pull the connector onto the tool should make it easier. also spraying it down with compressed air or wd40 or anything to clean it out a little makes it easier also.

Uhhhh are we still talking about the same thing....? Tool, deep, garter.....what kind of site is this?

<kidding> I'll take a stab at it, this is the sort of "trick" I need b/c I think for the most part I was doing it right.

Waskly, yeah I tried that, picked it up from another thread, I think upside down and with my arms pinned I just couldn't generate enough force; this will be doable on a rack. I'll spray some lubricant in there too, always helpful when garters are involved.....

< I slay me!>

Liked the smilie eating popcorn on the previous page! Just takin' it all in.....

Yessir!!! You'd be surprised what you can learn from a "heated" debate. :p:

Oh yeah! Hey loved your A/C blend door actuator sticky, first class. Used it to show my son how you could use the internet to do almost anything and save $$ a the same time. THanks.

Thanks. :D It's tough to explain to different generations how different it used to be. The internet has really changed the way we live our lives!

Same bat time, same bat channel. I'm right behind you............

I've removed the fuel filter several times and it was always a horror show trying to get the tool to release one of the fittings. One side may have released, but the other just never seemed to. I would fight it for a few hours (off and on: leaving to say a few choice words and then trying some more). I think because of the angle and such that I just wasn't able to force the tool in far enough (even though it felt in all the way). I finally grabbed some large needle noise pliers and presto the tool went in easily and the fitting popped right off..

Do you use the plastic removal tool(s) or metal, I guess is there a risk of breaking this little thing if you put pliers to it?

THanks

i used the metal individual 4 disconnects, but in all they all suck, 3rd gen explorers are a little better since they have 2 shields to keep the road dirt/grime/crap out of the spring inside so its a little easier, the one piece scissor type disconnect imo on 3rd gems is horrible since the exhaust is in the way. the tool seems too big for the small area, esp when the vehicle is warm.

and the location of the filter on 3rd 4th gens is really god awful. but at least i have not seen the fuel lines come apart on 3rd or 4th gens like on 2nd gens and first.

sorta of what they look like.

I've used the pliers on both.. on the plastic tool I started the break but nothing that was going to jam or cause issues with removing the filter.

Wrong Fuel Filter...

Got the truck on the lift, nightmare getting the two lines disconnected. Was using the plastic rings I bought, another mangled ring/clip from the shop, was pulling on the rear hose (inlet) when the front hose (outlet) releases:eek:! Go figure, fuel shot out all over the place even though I pulled CBs and let the vehicle die while at idle.

Finally get both hoses off, second one was no easier, and the damn replacement part is not the correct filter! The inlet from the tank is a larger diameter than the outlet side going to the engine!

The week prior, my son went to Auto Zone and came home with at Motorcraft FG-986B fuel filter (also says F89Z-9155-A on the box); that had both the inlet and outlet tubes were the SAME size.

Naturally the car is on the lift and not in any shape for a trip to the auto-parts store. Quick call to the Housing Director and she is near by, takes the old filter to a nearby CarQuest. The old filter had 33233 imprinted on it, they do a cross reference and give me an 86233 CarQuest that fits just fine. They did a quick check on the Motorcraft as listed above and it is "supposed" to fit the Explorer Sport 2001 6 cyl. What is up with that.

The Shop foreman and I look at the fuel lines coming from the tank and by all indications they look original and nothing looks amiss under the car. Clearly the two hoses were different sizes. You think the different sizes is to prevent you from putting the filter in backwards?

Has anyone ever run into this or have an explanation as to why the OEM part does not fit my car?
