Thermostat, or blown head gasket. Those would be my best guesses.

thermostat?

You should replace the transmission fluid, and filter one you fix this problem. Disconnect a radiator hose, and see if there is coolant in it. Did you ever check your radiator, and reserve tank to see if there is any coolant in them? You might have a leak in the cooling system.

As usual, it's not my truck. I'll probably look at it later on today, and will let you know. I suspect a clogged line or a problem with the radiator itself.

well, it's a bit far for me to go to an Autozone store...

anyways... just found out it's a 1st gen Explorer - the guy gave me all the wrong info about it.

Looks like it's one of the last 94 production models - one of the ;ast 1st gen trucks. A4LD with extra tranny oil cooler. IMO it has clogged line... not sure though... anything else to check? I think dropping the pan and blowing the lines would be the start... right?

Now I'm completely lost... how did we go from an overheating engine to clogged transmission cooler lines?!!?

Transmission fluid will shoot out if the transmission overheats. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is a clog in the system.

well, it overheats after 10 miles on the road... and yet the radiator stays cold...

BTW - since the begining it's about overheating tranny, not engine.

LOL!! Every time I read the first thread, I missed the word 'Tranny' as the first word.... Now it all makes MUCH more sense! :)

I, too, would start with a fluid and filter change. DO NOT FLUSH IT!!! A full fluid exchange wouldn't be a bad idea, but the thing is to look for the fluid quality for starters.

Now, as for what could cause it to overheat? A blocked cooler line, sure... other possibilities? Wrong grade of fluid maybe? Pump not moving enough fluid? Kinked line? I don't know otherwise....

It runs perfect while oil is cold... then the temperature just goes up and up without stopping. Like there was no cooling at all.

.....Just adding my .02....:D

...Tranny fluid and filter change along with pulling the tranny cooler and flushing it...There may be a blockage...

...The fan clutch....You could still be seeing cool temps on the motor while the fan clutch is not working properly...I think you are seeing this with the tranny being the first to show the fan clutch is not working properly...
