no reverse 1997 mercury mountaineer

howdy folks, todays problem is alack of reverse in a recently aquired 1997 mercury mountaineer. at this point i don't know what kind of tranny it is , but i'm headed out in the cold to figgure it out. strange , i've never lost reverse before , because it's used so little. any thoughts?
