90 Ranger XLT
90 ranger 4.0 2wd with the A4LD.

Seems I stripped out the splines on my Torque converter.. which sent metal shards through the whole thing cause the outser splines were sill good, so the pump was still running.

So, I hit the local junkyard and found a burned out 91 Explorer (Fireworks on the 4th set the interior on fire, or so the story goes) and I figured this was a good candidate for a replacement.

Of the many people I talked to locally, NO ONE told me there was a difference in the 2wd VS the 4wd for the output shafts.

Here I was thinking the only thing I needed to do was swap the extension housing and I was golden.

Wrong.

So, I tore into both, and swapped the output shafts. Not a HUGE deal since I didn't take apart the packs or anything.

Put new gaskets on the extension housing, bell housing, pan and both sides of the valve body.

Found out about the float balls the hard way.. and found this little flattened disk with a dimple on each side also in the VB channels. Tore into the old one to figure out where the balls and these disks went, and found TWO disks in the old one.

Put the balls and disks in the same locations as they were in the old one.
Got a new TC. It's all pretty and blue from Txchange.com (local shop here in portland)

Put it all back together.. install the tranny. Fill it up, then drain it again and drop the pan and the VB, cause I found the 3/4in square keeper for one of the valves.

After all is said and done.. fire it up.

That's the history, NOW COMES THE PROBLEM!

It goes forward.. OD, D, 2 and 1 all seem to work. No slippage, in fact it's a bit too grabby. Shift it into OD and it lurches pretty good.

This I figure is just band adjustment.. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.
(I havn't gotten to the adjusting yet)

But, I have no reverse and no Parking lockup.

Shifting into Reverse give a quiet 'thunk' like it's engaging the servo, but it doesn't move.

Putting it into park, there's no pins engaging for lockup.

Iv'e been working on this for two weeks now, and my wifes car just threw a rod two nights ago, the eve before my daughters 16th bday.

Needless to say, I'm extremely stressed out and loosing hair by the fistfulls over this. I would like to have ONE working vehicle at least, and right now that's my ranger.

Can anyone offer me some advice on possibilities for the reverse issue, and where I screwed up on the parking locks?

Oh, and I'm doing this all myself (my first tranny job other than clutch in an old courier) because I'm a student now (can you say construction worker and lousy economy?) and I've ran out of money with the $450ish I've put into the parts. So if it can involve something other than throwing more money at it, I'm all for it. I just don't know what else to do with it now.

Fixed the parking locks.. forgot to put the prawl and spring in, of course.

Replaced the o-rings on reverse servo, and now it does work... but slips so badly that it basically doesn't work.

Do I maybe have a float ball in the wrong place? I have 4 balls and two flattened disks with a dimple in em. (someone else on here called em 'hockey pucks')

My VB is a 2 soleniod.. can anyone give me a pic of where these balls and pucks should go?

(also installed a drain plug into my pan, FINALLY.. no more showers in tranny fluid!)

Trans troubles

I've got engine runaway on mainly 1-2 shift also hi idle . is there an upgrade on valve body gaskets I seem to remmember from working in dealership for several years but not much on trns.

brooklynbay How do I find the trans. section

I hate this *&^## transmission!!!

Took down the VB, completely disassembled it and put in a shift kit.
Put all the check balls in the correct locations, new pucks..

Still no reverse, and also no TC lockup. 3k rpm at 55.. should be 2200 or so.
I'm gonna have to take this thing back out and do it all over again.. aren't I?

Calling around I get told "You picked a hell of a trans to learn on" and "We have senior techs who won't even touch that one!"

Such confidence builders!
