I have a 98 Explorer Sport 4wd. The other day I got in it to go to work and as I started in reverse it soon stopped going and made a quiet "pop" noise and would not go into reverse anymore. All the forward gears are fine it drives like a champ until you put into reverse, nothing. It gave no indication that it would even come to this. My husband said if he cant fix it himself I have to get rid of it and Im not ready for that. I need help please. Any idea's? We flushed it, and when we took the pan off we found two very small round but flat peices in it. Do they belong to the valve body? HELP?

There very small probably an 1/8 of an inch round and 1/16 of an in thick they are round in shape but flat. They almost look like watch batteries, without the raised edge though. And they are not magnetic if that helps any?

Okay now were cooking. Any thoughts on why I have no reverse. We think it may be the valve body but someone said if it was the valve body then 1st wouldnt have worked either.

The low/reverse band, and servo engage the rear drum to apply reverse, and low gear. The valve body applies the hydraulic fluid to perform this task. The reverse modulation valve in the valve body could be stuck or like I stated in post # 2, your shift fork in the transfer case could have broken.

BB nailed the little round pieces..... not to worry. I doubt your reverse issue is transfer case, rather it is transmission. This is NOT a likely transmission rebuild issue... the reverse band is cast iron and robust - a low probabiolity failure point..

While there are a number of possible culprits, but the fact you "heard" a pop, suggests you may have a blown Valve body gasket.

I'd drop the valve body and replace the gasket. Now for some, this may be beyond their experience or willingness. If you plan to take it somewhere to have them do this, depending on the miles, I might suggest buying a rebuilt valve body from Central Valve Bodies (about $250) and taking THAT to the shop and asking them to replace it.

Are there other possibles? Yes, but I rate them low order of probability.

ps. You Did get the little O-ring seals on the filter when you replaced it, right ?
