Hello all. Thank you for taking the time to read this. As evident by the topic, I am having a problem starting my explorer.

2004 XLT
4.0 Eng. VIN "K"

Past Issues:
A few times in the past (2 or 3?) the vehicle died while driving. It seemed to happen at random times, and other times I would go out to start it and it would just crank without starting. Both of these problems were rare and have not occurred in nearly 5 months or so.

New Problem:
I parked the vehicle at home the other day, and forgot the radio and was running and the door was open. I was busy moving and got distracted. My wife found it that way later and turned off the key. I went out later and could not get the vehicle to even crank. I noticed the battery was real low, so I tried jump starting it, but still could not get it to crank. Thinking the battery may have given up the ghost, I installed a very good one from one of my other vehicles. It had better cranking amps than the original.

I tried starting, but still had the same problem. I could turn the key, all lights came on, cluster and interior, but did not even try to crank. With key on, I shorted the starter solenoid terminals and could hear it spin (freely?). I checked all fuses, cab and engine bay. Since I knew the blower worked, I tried swapping out its relay with the starter and ignition relays that were the same part number. I also did an inspection on the wiring in the engine bay, and checked all connectors. I opened the steering column up and checked the wiring for the PATS transceiver and other wiring in there. I looked on the dash where I believe the anti-theft light should be, and if it's working, I could not tell. No blink that I could discern. I had my wife try starting it while I tapped the starter, but no avail.

I am at a real loss here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post, but i wanted to get as much detail in as I could.

If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it. My explorer is stuck at the house I was renting because I can't afford to tow it till the 1st. I could really use some advice or a pointing in the right direction.

Welcome to this forum! Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to the accessory position?

Thanks for the welcome!

It has been 2 days since I messed with it, but I do not believe I heard it kick in. I heard clicking from relays, but that was about it. I will drive out there tomorrow early and recheck to be sure though.

Went and checked it again today. Turned key fwd and heard click and short whir sound from about where the fuel pump is. I was on my own, so had to stand by the door and listen. I checked the inertia sw. and it is not tripped. Still will not try to crank.

Any other ideas out there?

If you shorted the starter by hand and heard it spin without it trying to crank the engine,, you may have a bad starter solenoid, the gear on the starter might not be engaging the teeth on the flywheel.

Hmm, I will pull it off and take it for a bench check. All I heard was it whirring, definitely no crank.

Well, got it bench checked. The starter is good and strong. Other ideas?

Having the same problem

I have replaced the batt. and starter but to have spent all that $$$ and still won't start. someone had the same problem and the computer chip in the key was bad. If you find the prob. could you let me know.
thanks H. Jackson

Sorry for not updating this sooner, I had been in the middle of moving when I had this problem and a lot has happened since then.

I found enough information on the alldata diy site and was able to troubleshoot it down to a computer problem. Once I got to that point I had to take it to the dealership. They reprogramed the PCM and then recoded the keys to it. The software on the box had somehow corrupter or dumped. After that it worked fine and has to this day.

Thanks to BrooklynBay and fixxxer for answering early on.
