what do you mean "would free spin and stay in but not long enough to start it"????

A starrter should never "free spin". The starter should stay engaged and continue to turn the motor over until you release the key. IF it doesn't, then you have either a starter issue or powering issue.... or a broken fly wheel tooth where the starter is then unable to grab the flywheel.
