Noise and shudder going up hill.

I have a 2000 Explorer xls sohc, and when I am going up hill (sometimes on flat ground too) I get a “shudder” from what feels like the passenger side front tire along with a small grinding sound. When it does this, the car will pull slightly to the right. It will continue for about 7 to 10 seconds. Then it will “let loose” and when it does the RPMs will jump slightly and the car will stop pulling. I’ve looked for play in the wheel to see if it was the boot, but it didn’t feel like there was any.

Any Ideas?

Are you feeling like the trans is slipping? From you description it is hard to tell. When you say pulling do you mean like the trans has been shifed into neutral or does it seem like you have a wheel bearing going bad causing the vehicle to be pulled to the right?

I tested it out on the way home, it seems like it only does it when it wants to down shift so it might be a trans problem.

brake line failure.Maybe a one of your piston ate the boot and is catching the rotor.You dont nessecarily have to be hitting the brakes.If the line has failed(ie the inner tube)it will still apply the brake via the pressure is not being released.

I've merged, and renamed the title. Please don't double post. Did you ever replace the front brakes or the transmission fluid, and filter? Do you have 4WD? If so, do you have auto or manual locking hubs?

I have 4wd with auto hubs, I have not replaced anything yet (just got it less than a year ago)

Second gens don't have selectable hubs. They are always engaged.


I'd try the brown wire mod or unplugging the t-case to rule out a faulty sensor. 4wd may be engaging.

odd thing, I put "new" tires on, 31 10.5 15 and all of the symptoms went away, any idea why that would be, or am I just lucky. I would hate to over look something and have it get worse again.

Did you have the rims balanced with the new tires?

I got the tires on rims (from v8boatbuilder)
I did not get them re-balanced though
