Please help. My 2002 explorer 4X4 ABS, has a strange sound coming from the drivers side wheel well. It is a kind of tap. It actually sounds like a powerdoor lock locking or unlocking, but it is not in a door, it sounds loudest when I open the back and put my ear on the side above the drivers side rear wheel. The noise comes and goes, but when it is there it is a regular beat and is there as long as the key is turned to run. The engine does not have to be running. it happens both parked and driving and keeps up until you break hard, hit a bump or turn the key off.

That is most likely one of the actuators on your auxilliary climate control unit has failed. There are two actuators on that unit, one for the blend door and one for the mode door. You will have to remove the rear quarter trim panel and unbolt the aux cc unit from the chassis. Then you will be able to swing it out enough to see (or feel) which actuator is clicking. It will have plastic gears stripped inside the white plastic case. Unplug the connector, replace the actuator, put everything back together and you will be good to go.
