When I start accelerating(pedal almost to the floor or just a fast take off) there is a rattle or some type of noise that occurs, but goes away when I am at a steady speed. It seems to occur in first gear and when the rpm's get above 3,000 and then goes away. It doesn't happen on slow take offs.

Also, I hear a whistling noise coming from the front end. I hope it's not the wheel bearings.

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks,
Lyle

AHHHHH There's that damn whistle again search around there is a thread called whistle while you drive. Has alot of info, I had the same problem my whistle was a vacum leak.

First post, huh... :)

Rattling noise meaning pingging noise? If so try using higher octane gas. What modifications have you done to your truck?

Well from the myriad of common problems these key words fit into, you should search for 00m12 to see if that fits your rattle description... and IAC whisle to see if that fits your whistle.
Two very common problems.... good luck

THE WISTLE U HEAR IS YOUR POWER STEERIN FORD CANT MAKE A GOOD POWER STEERING IF THERE LIFE DEPENEDED ON IT

welcome to the site.. it could be several different things. is there any way to explain the noise a little better. the one when you accelerate. if im correct you are talking about two different noises? 1 when u take off and one that you think is wheel bearings.

I think I have the exact same rattle problem with mine, so I'll try to describe it a little better.

The rattle noise coming from the front seems to be load dependant, like climbing up a hill. It's not real easy to hear over traffic usually, because it's not godawful loud, just enough to get your attention and start wondering what it is. And it's not a pinging sound, it's like a piece of plastic is poking into the fan and slopping around (but it's only happening under load, it's quiet the rest of the time).

It most likely has nothing to do with the fan, that was just the best way I could describe it.

This is on a 1991 2wd.

Sounds like you're describing a bad ping to me...

Damn whistle, Well my guy was wrong it's not a vacum leak. It sounds like it's comming from the air intake could that be what is making the whistle. I mean it only happens at low RPM's.

Well now one of you was talking about a RATTLE and the other person was talking about a WHISTLE. I was addressing the RATTLE.

And I was talking about the WHISTLE

my 93 made a noise just like that
the belt tensioner was loose and hit the fan sometimes. check that

Thanks everybody for all the advice and tips with my first explorer problem. Hopefully I won't have any more problems after I get these things worked out. I am taking it to the dealer next week.

That's your IAC. If you pull the cover off the air intake, does it get louder? Try cleaning the IAC. Search and you'll find LOTS of info about it.
