Hi all this is my first time so please be kind...
My 96 explorer was towed home the other day with a diagnosis of a dropped valve or valve spring (made by roadside assistance). I have removed the left hand side rocker cover and discover all the valves and valve spring in place and working fine. Compression check etc. BUT i have notice on turning the engine over that the timing chain tensioner(looks like an oversize cam follower) is jumping in and out a lot and making a noise. I suspect that this is not normal and i will replace it. Is there anything else I should be looking at also????
Thanks Dave@australia

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the stock 95-01 section. Did you check the oil pressure? Is the timing chain OK? You said that the tensioner was making noise.

Oil pressure all O.K. I found on removing the valve tensioner that the tensioner's pressure is severly lacking compared to a new one that i have purchased. Ford has supplied me with one for a 1997 to 2000 explorer ( my wife picked it up) Do you know if this will fit the 96 model it appears to be similar in size etc.. are the engine the same in the top end?

engine difference in left hand / right hand drive

Hi Guys,
Once again i find myself pondering as my explorer is still not going. I am currently trying to resource a remanufactured engine (cheaper than an OZ rebuild). A U.S.A. engine supplier(via chat lines) has told me that a 4.0 litre remanufatured engine will not fit into a right hand drive vehicle. I find this very hard to believe.
As i am trying to purchase a long block and as far as i am concerned an engine block is a engine block (with change over of my aux equipment) Can someone tell me if this is true or am i being lead down a garden path ??????

compare block part numbers

I have no first hand knowledge but I agree that it seems there should be no differences in the block. To be sure try BrooklynBay's suggestion. Get the part number from your block and compare to part number on remanufactured block.

Did you have the SOHC V6 engine? I've heard that they were available in Australia in 1996 even though not available in US until 1997. I assume that you determined the chain tensioners and cassettes were bad and decided it would be cheaper to replace than repair.

yes , you are right I do have the 4.0l SOHC engine. It took me a while to work out that this engine was available to the states in 97 yet it is in my 96 xlt. It is hard trying to tell some people from engine rebuild chat lines as they are telling my that the engine for the 96 Explorer is not a SOHC. , After some phone calls to the states with my VIN number i was able to find an engine and the correct info about engine replacement, Thanks to gotengines for some solid and positive information.
