Hi

Just got back from a short drive in the car and noticed an incredibly loud rattling noise coming from the top of the engine.

The engine isn't mis-firing and running ok. Sorry can't describe it any better!

Does anyone have any suggestions on what this could be and how to fix it..... thanks. I am not a major mechanic but it is a worrying noise and not sure if I should drive the car.

Andy

I've moved your thread into the stock 95-01 section. Do you have the OHV or the SOHC engine? It might be the timing chain.

Thanks for the repley.

I have the SOHC engine and after a bit of a strip down i have found the timing chain guide rails passanger side (my car is right hand drive) have broken.
In the process of stripping to check the timing chain on the front of the engine to see if any damange on that one!

left guides

I think you're saying that the left side guides are broken which means that you won't have to pull the engine to swap them. The following thread may be helpful but some of the items may be on the opposite side from yours:
