Hi all,

I'm new to explorers not so new to cars. I've done a lot of work on my past cars. I've done head gaskets, pulled engines etc. Mostly on my old Foxbody 5.0 Mustang. So I wanted to get your guys opinion on this explorer for a winter car since my Saleen isn't going to be a good winter car here.

I don't know why the mechanic would predict the head gaskets going out, but I could change those if need be. Also I would fix the fuel sending unit, probably won't bother with the A/C.

Thanks,
Quinn :salute:

If you're willing to put in the wrench time with something like that then it's worth it. I don't see that changing the water pump would cause the head gasket to go even though cracked heads are common. My 94 with 165k is still factory sealed(knock on wood). Fuel sender is easy and I would think a 93 already has an R134a AC system but could be wrong.

Prepare for a lot of maintenance. There is a ton of information on this site and The Ranger Station to keep it going.

Keep another first gen going!

I'm willing to work on it, that's a hobby of mine :) I agree with the head gaskets, I think their mechanic is digging in their pockets. Also I want to get some POR-15 for the rust spots that look like they're under the running boards.

Anything I should look for? I'm going to look at it tomorrow, possibly bring it home. What are some preventative maintenance items I could do? I plan on doing a tune up with some new plugs/wires, filters, and fluids.
