Hello everyone i bring a new problem.

I finally got arround to doing a tranny flush, i did it and had it all right im pretty damn sure. My tranny fluid dipstick is perfectly full right now but my problem is. It will not upshift into second. So what all could it be? I did play with the butterfly screw or whatever but it was upshifting perfectly also had a vacuum leak from the brake booster but i just fixed that but the problem is still occuring?

Any help would be great at this point.

Also when i use cruise control it starts working then? So im not sure if i need a new trans or something is just a little messed or what.

Soooo..... you were using cruise control in 1st gear??? Then when you did it shifted into 2nd and 3rd like normal??

Hmmm....

Vacuum, that's my thought maybe....

But what caused you to use cruise in 1st?? THAT's my biggest question.

Well i was driving and i just thought randomly cruise control so i got it to 50kmh set it pushed the button to go and it shifted normal. I checked almost everything it seems like its a vacuum leak or something but im pretty sure ive checked it all. The tranny flush and replaced the brake booster rubber gromet is when it started not to upshift... if its not the vacuum its either the govenor or the bands in the transmission checked everything i can think of and what ive found in researching.

Only time i had vacuum lines off at any time was when i did my intake and head gaskets and its been working fine since then. Think i need a new tranny which is effing gay because in a little while well closer future i wanted a 302 and c6.....

The thing is the CC has nothing to do with the tranny, so if it works with the CC on then it's something about the CC being on that is "fixing" it. For as long as it's on.

But if it DOES shift when CC is on....then the tranny is fine, it's just for some reason not getting the "siginal" to shift unless the CC is on.

Maybe someone can cast some light on this, but I thought my Trans Am had a bad tranny for a year (wouldn't shift out of first), until one day I was talking to someone on here about how some tranny's need vacuum to shift, and it dawned on me I had never checked that out on my OWN tranny. Went out and found the tranny had blow the vacuum line off the connetion... DOH!!! I had towed that thing like 2x becuase of that "bad" tranny. All becuase a small black hose had blown off.

That was a TH350 tranny though, I haven't been able to get anyone to tell me if these auto's use vacuum to shift or not. I have a M5 so can't test it myself.

IIRC the a4ld 1-3 shifts is pure hydaulic. 3-4 and converter lockup are electronically limited. That means the computer is controlling solenoids that when engaged allow the 3-4 shift and the lockup of the converter..

The only time I've ever heard of a no or late 1-2 shift on the a4ld was from the governor which is is the back of the trans. Its a weight that is pretty easy to change. That normally only happens until the trans gets warm, then its ok..

maybe Glacier or one of the other trans guys will chime in here.

Took off the kickdown cable. Still nothing... I keep saying its my tranny dad still doesnt think so.

Its time to go back to the beginning.

Is it really turning on the cruise control that makes it shift from 1st to 2nd? How fast are you going when you that?

Is it consistant that it won't go into 2nd unless you turn on the cruise?

I still don't believe this is really happening. I went back and checked my notes.. the 1-2 shift is pure transmission, nothing external.. Even if the modulator was screwed up, or the kickdown was pulled all the way, it would still shift, just late.

Pretty sure i just found out the answer.
My dad called a friend of his who is a master of cars/trucks. He said it is probably the filter. He noticed this in a few different vechicles and this filter is sucking the pan up and not any trans fulid. Thats what i got out of the phone convo... but im pretty damn sure its that.

it's my understanding that 1-2 shifting is controlled by the vacuum modulator... it's a cheap part, but a pain to get to. You have to pull the front seats and console to get to the transmission from inside the cabin.

Yup im probly going to have to change it the filter thing didnt do anything. Theres one more trick im going to do first though.

Thanks for the helping guys.

Well just adjusted the bands they where pretty loose but it didnt really do anything?

You said that it happened right after you flushed the transmission. This makes me believe that dirt got pushed into the governor or the valve body, and fouled things up. The servo pistons dry out, and leak after a while, but you wouldn't experience this problem right after a flush if it would be the servo.

Alright thanks.

Also i adjusted the bands again did it again after to and i know i have them right now and adjusted my kickdown once more. I got my X to get into second after 4000rpm. Good sign or no? Its getting better with everything i do seems like it might be a bunch of little things that may have went on it maybe. Il check the govenor to.
BTW it doe this at hot and cold.

Seafoam sells a transmission cleaner. I haven't tried it, but you could if you want to see if it will clean everything out. Don't drive with it in too long. You will have to drain the fluid, and use new fluid.

Ok il see if anyone sells it arround here.

Ok so heres what i will do. Going to check the govenor first, then maybe the valve body could do that after i use that trans seafoam to, then maybe the servo dont think it is that though.

Any other possible things i could try? haha ive done everything ive found on here except what i just said above.

Alright i can do that.

Another question i thought the clogged govenor was for only when the tranny is cold?
