O/D is flashing on and off

Help guy first vehicle I own and it happens to be a 97 Ford Explorer with a pushrod motor the overhead valve. And yesterday the overdrive light has been flashing on and off repeatedly and has not stopped and I don't know what to do does it mean that it needs to be serviced meaning transmission fluid and filter replace

You need to have it scanned. It has a transmission code or codes stored. Go to a shop that has the proper equipment and software to do thi. Not just a code reader. Let us know what codes you are getting.
