O/D Light Flashing/Tranny slippage

So, my fiance was driving our 04 Explorer last night and called me and said that she was giving it gas and it was barely moving. I told her to stop right where she was and I would be right down. When I got there I noticed the O/D light was flashing. I put it into gear to move it off the side of the road and into a parking lot about 50 feet away. It would barely move. I parked it and had it towed to a local garage the next morning. They looked at it and told my fiance the transfer case had exploded. Also, they said, it could have tranny issues also. They did not give her any error codes but, I am going to call in the morning to see if they pulled any. I am not sure what they meant by the transfer case exploding? Everything I have read about the O/D light flashing has to do with the tranny?? Hopefuly will find out more in the morning. In the mean time, any suggestions or insight would be great... One last thing, looking at a transfer case out of a 2004 Explorer with a 4.0 Liter. My Explorer is 4.6 liter. Same case???

Can I swap I swap an 02 4WD explorer v6 transfer case into an 04 v8??

Yes the transfer case can cause the problem

Yes you can as long as they are both the same type, meaning both are 4x4 or AWD you can not put a AWD in a 4x4 or vice versa (well you can but not easy and more work)
