I have a 00 X XLT 4.0 2wd, and the other day the O/D light started flashing on it after I driving for about an hour. Fluid was just changed about 5K ago, and have never had any problems shifting. I stopped and checked the fluid, and its not burnt. Anyone else experience this problem? Its hard to call out problems on these new vehicles when everything has to be hooked up to a computer just to tell you whats wrong with it. Don't feel like paying 63 bucks just for them to hook it up to a computer to tell me whats wrong...haha Any thoughts?? thanx

I had this same problem but it was from running in 4low @ 15 mph for about 10 miles on the beach...the light flashed all the way home (from cape cod) and didnt shift into od. i just had a shop reset the computer, and the problem went away, and the tranny shifted perfectly, like it did before. good luck

Unfortunately its hard to determine what is causing your O/D light to flash. I would recommend get it scanned.. It can be a bad torque convertor, a bad O/D band, etc. Most times its a torque convertor that is slipping that brings up a O/D light.

How does the torque converter slip? Why does it happen intermitantly and why does clearing the computer fix it? Is the only fix replacing the converter?

O/D flashing

Save yourself some bucks by checking your charging circuit! Most Autozones check the battery and alternator for free.

My O/D was flashing. The tranny was even starting to shift hard. I inquired at the dealer and he offered to hook me up to the scan for $125, but he had that "Time for a new Tranny" glint in his eye.

I did some surfing and noticed that other Ford drivers had had similar problems, and some fixed them by replacing the battery and/or alternator.

To keep the story short, my battery was shot. 8.8v. There was no indication of a problem. It started fine and the idiot Amp Meter said everything was fine. Bought a new Die Hard--no more flashing O/D!

Hope this helps!

There are several threads on this problem, I too experienced it on my 95 XLT two weeks ago. The cheapest way, you can reset the computer by disconnecting your battery and leave it disconnected for several minutes. Some said just disconnect the positive terminal, others say the negative. I did mine the proper way to disconnect a battery, positive off first, then negative, re-install with positive first then negative.
You will have to reset your radio presets and the clock afterwards.

This method did fix some posters problems, unfortunately for me it kept coming back on after several minutes of driving. After the 3rd time of resetting decided it was time to bring to a reputable transmission shop I was referred to, not a franchise but rather a small type one man shop. Put the scanner on it and showed no 2nd gear. Stayed at the shop and he dropped the pan to find the remnants of the 2nd gear band.

Had a rebuild done and back in business. He did put a shift kit in also and I don't like the way it is downshiting from 2nd to first, it bangs a bit. He told me he noticed it too but to use it and if it didn't improve to bring it back in two weeks and he would drop the pan and make an adjustment. A week has passed and nothing improved so I'll be taking it back next week. Even before he rebuilt it he told me he has all customers return in two weeks for a checkup, a slight inconvenience but it appears he cares about his work.

Good luck with yours, I'll keep my fingers crossed it's nothing major, and perhaps the battery cable removal will fix.
