is it possible to do an obd-II conversion on a '91? i've recently installed the turbo on my '91 (some of you may have seen my build thread) and now it turns out of course i need to get one of those tuners. well, they all work with obd-II which is more capable anyhow. so my question is, what would be involved with converting to obd-2? would the ECU out of a later model (say 96 w/ ohv) work? would i also need the wiring harness, would the maf change etc?

Yes, it is possible to convert to the EEC V....you will need the computer and harness obviously....I only know of one person who has done it though...Doug Studdard aka Doug904. He had some posts about it on RangerPowerSports. Not sure what the details involved are as you might have to deal with PATS, Cam position sensor, and a number of other sensors that are not present on the 1991-1994 models.

Or, if you want a simpler approach that will let you tune everything and is nearly plug and play...see the link for the SDS Engine management system that I have for sale in my sig :)

Well that looks like it would do the trick, but a bit out of my price range for this build. maybe i should just swap a 7.3L diesel w/ zf5 in there and see how that works.

i'm going to try calling some dyno shops about obd-1 tuning as well

I have completed my OBD-II conversion on my `92 Explorer.

I went about it totally different than just about anyone out there.

I cut the firewall out of my `92 and welded in the firewall from a `97. I also swapped the dash, and the COMPLETE wiring harness....from headlight to taillight.

I bought a totalled `97 Explorer for $450. I sold off some parts that made the purchase BETTER THAN FREE!

Check craigslist.
