I recently changed the filter on my 2000 XLT automatic transmission, and when I removed the pan, I found two small metal objects at the bottom. I am posting a picture (hope it works) of what I found. This pan has never been removed before. Does anyone recognize these things?

Are they magnets?

No, they are not magnetic. I only found two of them after I had dumped out the old fluid out of my drain pan. I looked around to see if I could see anything that looked to be missing, but all looked to be OK. The truck runs fine, but I have only gone about 100 Kms.

I don't know then. Have to leave this one for someone that knows a little more than me :D

PennY for your Trans

I would seriously sit down and write a note to Ford on what you found This way if there is any problem with the trans they will cover it.

But they do look like Valve Body spacers which should be in the valve body not inthe bottom of the trans You would have to check with a Trans manual to see where they go

I can't see Ford offering to cover any future damage, as that would open them up to anyone who wanted to get coverage on their trans. I think I will take these things into a transmission shop to see if they know what they might be. I would go to the dealer, but I have had some rather bad experinces there recently, and I am avoiding them at all costs.

I originally thought I could get the pan out without having to remove the front drive shaft, and spent some time gentley wiggiling and shifting the pan into different positions to get it to fall free. I originally thought I may have knocked something out, but I did do a good inspection of the area and could not find anything that looked out of place, so I put the pan back on and hoped all would be well, which it has been so far.

I took these parts into a transmission shop today, and was told that they are "slugs" from the pan gasket. These are the things that are embeded in the gasket to keep the gasket from being compressed to tightly.

AH, yes indeedy they are.

I've installed those gaskets and they are the spacers--I don't know if they'll damaged the tranny if they get in there though.

WOW that must be a special tranny. I only seen the chick in Japan (if ya know who i am talking about) that could dispense change like that!!! lol Of course she could also cut a banana up too. Of course no one ate it though. lol :D

Gasket spacers

Yep, no worries. Nice to have a trans shop that tells you the truth and not try to sell you a "fix". Weird, but it has been my experience at least that trans shops seem to be the most honest of repair shops.
