Obsessed with cleaning?

Zaino recommends using Dawn dishwashing detergent on your vehicle ( to remove all wax ) prior to using their goods.

I did not know that...last time I used dishwasher soap on a car it put spots all over the paint and no amount of rubbing, buffing, or waxing would get them out.....Still, with regards to Zaino, I still think I'd just ante up a few extra dollars and get the super strength bug and tar remover concentrated wash.

Its very important to remove ALL wax from the car prior to usine Zaino. The Dawn is the best, gentelest detergent to axxomplish this task.

Yes, you can use Dawn to remove wax, but it shouldnt be used as your regular car wash. If you need a car wash go to Walmart and pick up a bottle of Meguiars Gold Class shampoo. But if it is used regularly, it can cause the paint to streak.

We use Dawn soap at the shop all the time. It is the best thing to take off wax so if you are trying to wax a vehicle it's not to smart to use.

Have to remember we don't want ANY WAX on when we are getting ready to paint.

Grant, I don't think my hood looks that bad considering all the work you do on yours and I just wash mine at the car wash.
:p

Spa's, you have to get out this way so we can get you dirty. (No your Explorer silly) :D

When using the Zaino sustem, we don't want any wax left on either.

Scratch X has never did anything when I tried it on scratches. I just use it as buffing compound now, because the only thing it is good for is removing swirls.

BTW Al, you should be a Zaino spokesperson.

Ya, but your paint isnt as old as mine. Neiner neiner neiner :p

;)

And I think Hartman is right. Al and Sal would make a good team :)

Ok well today i went to walmart and bought a couple of things.
I bought the Mothers California Gold Clay Bar System (it was the only clay they had) for a little over 13 dollars. It has:
  • a piece of yellow clay about the size of a bar of soap
  • a 16 oz bottle of Mothers California Gold Showtime Instant Detailer
  • Mothers California Gold Original Formula Carnauba Cleaner Wax
    [/list=a]
i also bought a 8" by 10" Chenille Wash Mitt

Now can either Grant or Billy or some other car cleanliness fanatic tell me what exactly to do?

I have never needed to use clay, so I have never used it. The following is Zaino;s recommendation. I imagine all clays are similar.

>>2. If you are looking for the ultimate paint surface preparation. Use Zaino Z-18 ClayBar first or skip to Step 3.

Zaino Z-18 ClayBar was designed to remove airborne contaminants, paint overspray, water spots, rail dust, industrial fallout, diesel fuel & catalytic converter residue and any other bonded surface contaminants from paint. All cars even brand new factory paint has airborne contaminants... Here's the deal. The non-abrasive Z-18 ClayBar will remove any surface contaminants from the paint finish and not hurt the clear-coat. The ClayBar will get that paint finish smooth as glass. Now remember waterspots, bird droppings and bug guts if left on the paint finish for any length of time. Will etch into the paint finish. The ClayBar will also remove any store bought waxes....

I recommend you use my car wash (Z-7) as a lubricant for the ClayBar. Just make sure to keep the surface area lubricated while using the ClayBar. Use 1/2 capful of Z-7 Car Wash to 12 ounces of water. I use a spray bottle for the mix. Shake it up and spray the area to be Clayed. Just make sure to keep the surface area lubricated while using the ClayBar.

<<

Good luck and keep us advised on your project.....

Well, I will tell you how I did it when I clayed. I washed with Dawn and dried the truck. Then I cut a third off the bar and kneaded it so the bottom was kind of flat. I sprayed the Mothers spray lightly on small sections on the roof and rubbed the bar lightly back and forth covering maybe a 5 inch section at a time in between the runners in the roof, so I did a 5" section between each of the runners working from front to back or however you want to do it. I sprayed on enough so the bar didnt "skip" across the paint and rubbed in overlapping motions until I coudl feel the paint become smooth under the bar, and then I sprayed some more spray on the area and buffed it off. I did this from top down to the bottom. You can wash afterwards and then apply a polish or wax.

That was how I did it, but Billy or others may have other tips or tricks they use when claying.

Good luck buddy!

I have found that 3M swirl remover and my electric buffer work really well at removing light scratches and other imperfections in the paint. Ive never tried the clay, maybe next week ill give it a shot.

I know what I'll be doing this weekend after reading all these replies....lol

>still shocked about the Dawn soap< I suppose that is the best the way to get wax and contaminants off, but I never thought of it that way...Does it ever affect the paint that you put on over it? I'd use an analogy of using nailpolish remover on your nails and watching how the fresh coat of polish will bubble up if you don't wait at least an hour, but I kinda doubt any of you men paint your nails ;) If you do, I don't want to know about it!

I think I'm going to try the oven cleaner this weekend-my engine sure needs the help. What should I use to cover up the battery and alternator? aluminum foil? cloth? (assuming that I have to take it off before driving, of course)

Alright guys...I spent 5 hours working on my car today. I took one pic because my camara's battery died so here it is.

Look at the bottle and read what it says. Cleans GREASE and gunk of your dishes so why wouldn't it take off wax? :p

At the shop we don't want to take the wax off to make it pretty but to make sure there is no wax on the pieces we want to sand. That way we won't get fish eyes in our paint.

Spa's, instead of spending all that time cleaning your "X" why not come out and go wheeling with me this weekend???
I'm pretty sure we can plenty dirty!!!
