odometer has a short

the odometer in my 2003 explorer goes off sometimes and might be off for a day or sometimes a few minutes. then it will just pop back on. what could be the culprit?

Mine does exactly the same thing. When I start it up it comes on but after a couple minutes it fades till you almost can't see it then it will fade off completely. I just noticed it started happening. The odometer still works, and the speedo still works as do all the other gauges and lights on the dash.

Any thoughts?

Since I just got my new to me Explorer, it's going back to the dealer tomorrow morning so they can repair it at this point. When we told him about it today he didn't seem surprised by it so perhaps it's not an uncommon occurence ? I did so some searching on the net but didn't come up with anything solid.
