Odometer messed up

I have searched the threads but have not found this problem before. I have a 94 XLT 4wd. Well as it was about to turn 80K miles the 79 just stopped and the rest of the numbers kept turning. I called Ford and they sid they could fix it w/out having to do the miles unknown thing but the cost is like $600 and i won't have the Truck back for like 2 weeks. Is there anyway I can fix this or do i HAVE to take it to Ford for legal reasons?

Do you plan on reselling it? If not, then it is perfectly legal to keep it that way. Just drive the truck into the ground, and when it's done for, part it out.

Well yeah i was hoping to resell at some point and i am not expecting a whole lot but I just wondered if this is like something that just cam loose or if you mess with this stuff at all you are illegal.
