1996 Explorer XLT
Hello!

I am a new member, recently purchased '96 Explorer XLT (private sale) and have browsed many of the posts. I wonder if anyone has experienced odometer problems. I have a Chilton's, and the pictures and information are limited. I've "snapped" the button, and checked for fuses, but no luck. Any suggestions? JD

What's the exact problem?

SPeed differences, needles not working? etc..

my 96 had similar problem. I rest the trip, and both odometer and trip just stopped....I spoke with someone who said its a little plastic gear on the back of the cluster that either falls out or snaps..and you can either do it yourself or send it somewhere for like $100 they can fix it

or...........

I just had that problem and as it turned out the rear bearing on the transfer case was loose and leaking so that i had to rebuild the transfer case and it fixed the problem. I would grab the rear output shaft at the transfer case and see if you can move it up and down and/or side to side. If it moves then the bearing is probably bad. Also leaking from the seal is a good indication along with it moving. I would replace the plastic gear teeth first just to be sure. It will cost around 5 dollars and you may have to order it from the dealership. The vehicle speed sensor may be bad too. ( around 30 to 40 dollars).
By the way, My speedo was moving in a jerky way upon acceleration and would drop to zero when i let off the gas . Hope this helps.
