off road lighting problem

I have added 2 55 watt rectangular hella lights to the front of my 92 Mazda Navajo they are spliced into my highbeam wireing so they will come on when I turn on my highbeams the first trip they worked fine now when I turn them on after 5 mins my lights are flashing on and off first the hellas then my highbeams and finally they just shutdown till I turn the switch off and back on if anyone could tell Me how to resolve this if be greatly appreciative

Did you just tie the wires in or did you add a relay? It sounds like your overloaded.

Thanks the thread was very informative im going to get 2 relays one for each light and connection my only problem is going to be instalation right now my wires are spliced directly into my highbeam wires and Id like to be able to keep them hooked up so they will come on and go off with my highbeam switch without adding a new switch

Just like in my thread (the one linked above) I think you'll be better off running dedicated wiring for your off road lights and have a switch in the cab. It'll take some work but can be done in an afternoon not to mention it's safer.

The wire from pin 86 on the relay is spliced into one of your high beam wires. This will turn on the Aux lights any time the high beams are on.
If you put a switch in the same wire you would be able to turn the Aux lights off when the high beams are on. Either way works good.

You do not need a switch if you use the setup in the drawing. The relay is the switch. It is not recommended that you splice into your headlight wiring as you will have tragic results. (ie:setting things on fire or rendering them useless..it will get expensive quickly) The only connection would be just a trigger wire from the headlight circuit to the relay. Look at a relay as a switch that has 2 different power sources. 1 power source (in this case your headlight circuit) will only supply a small amount of voltage to the relay, basically just enough to flip a switch. The second power source (in this case your battery) will actually be powering the added lighting. When the headlights are switched on, it will essentially "flip" the internal switch to allow power from your battery to power up the additional lights. Does this all make sense now?

Thanks for all the help I had to add a 4 prong relay and take connect the lights to a toggle switch but everything works great and the lights seem brighter
