oh ya know just another 2nd gen sas in the works

After many years of my 1996 XLT sitting in storage it is time to start collecting parts for the explorer build..
My set up will be a full width Dana 44\9", Wild Horses 5.5" springs 5:13 gears and locked front and rear. Seems to me thats what most people have done on here and seems to work great
Let the prosess begin
Here is my XLT With the basic torsion twist, shackles and body lift

All i need now is to gear an lock my axles witch will be happening in a few weeks and find a set of solid axle radius arms and brackets...im sure im missing a bunch but it will all be purchaced or made during the build..I will keep you guys updated..like i said im going to buy mu gears, install kits etc in a few weeks as soon as the moneys there..enjoy!:salute:

What size tires you running? If it is going to be mainly a wheeling vehicle I would really consider going with 5.38's expectially if you are getting tires any bigger than a 35". I would have if I went with a 9" rear. Mine's a first generation explorer though. Looks like you did your homework though.

yes i did do my homework for sure thanks to this forum..i am going to run 5:13 gears. i have heard that 5:38's are weak. i think the 5:13 ratio will be good but eventually i am going to do the 1350\1354 doubler..t-case gears make a WORLD of difference..when i did the 4:70.1 in my old 4Runner it felt like a totally different truck in low-range..my plan is to get the sas done by summer so i will wheel it with 5:13's, lockers, stock case, 4R55E trans and 4.0L then soon after i will do the doubler and the future mods are a 5.0L and a 5-Speed...tomorrow i might start the disc brake conversion on the 9"..i am running dana 44 rotors, 1982 K-10 calipers, and 3\8" steel home made brackets for the calipers ...i may post some pics tomorrow..

Let the 9" disc brake conversion begin..keep you gous updated on the progress

ok so im scratching the idea of using dana 44 calipers because i have to modify my 9" axle shaft flanges.. i got to thinking..what if u break an axle shaft on the trail? i would be screwed because i would need to modify my spair too..

this will be a nice build. good luck.

i had the same setup for years and it worked great. you may want to look into lengthening your RAs and adding rod ends. it works better and looks way better.

i ran 4.88s and 37s and it worked fine, but your right 5.10 will be way better.

ok guys..sorry for not updating for a while..but here is whats happening.. got the brakes finnished on the 9"! i got my 5:13's and master overhaul kit and spool now i am in the middle of setting the gears up..i hope that it will be donr by thursday and i can have the axle put back together and move the HP 44 in the garage and start working on that...i might also buy a set of Wild Horses extended radius arms..all the parts are comming together and i cant wait to start cutting the IFS out and turning it into a rock crawler..keep u guys updated..

Make sure you post some detailed pics of how you mount the steering box, thats the part that is keeping me from doing a SAS

I would go with Duff longarms or the Cage longarms which are now called Bloody Knuckle Garage.

Looks like a good build. I am currently building mine and doing the Cage arms...

so what do u guys recomend for radius arm brackets?

so what do u guys recomend for radius arm brackets?

That depends entirely on your radius arms. If you are gonna run extended stock arms you should look at Stic-o's sas thread, he modified stock brackets from his donor vehicle (77 f-150 iirc) and the turned out nice and work great

i have been reading Stic-o's thread like crazy..i saw that he modified those brackets but im going to be running the Wild Horses arms..do i have to modify stock brackets regardless or is there a stock bracket that i can get from James Duff or Wild Horses that will work for the explorer frame?

So i just pulled the beast out of the forest where it has been sitting for a few years..fired right up but i think it needs tranny fluid because it only moves when it hits 4 grand haha oh well the trans is comming out anyways..the original plan for this truck as dana 60's front and rear with leaf springs so the pics are still with the 60 rear and SOA i like ford 9 inches better so thats why the 60 is comming out and the 9 is going in..here is some pics enjoy..

this is right when i pulled it out..

glad to hear you are ditching the 44. i ran one for a few years and it really limits how you can drive and tire size.

that looks tall. run 42z with that lift and cut the fenders.

good work. keep posting progress.
