Can someone explain the differences (besides the # of cams)? What motor has the best performace, hp, etc? Just a question of curiosity. Why did Ford change from the OHV to the SOHV?

They are apples and oranges.

The SOHC has a ton more HP, but it also revs up to 7000 RPM.

The OHV is still a pushrod engine, makes gobbs of torque down real low, and redlines at 5500.

The SOHC has 207 HP
the OHV has 160

The SOHC engine was the obvious eveolution for the big Ford V-6, all Ford engine's are getting rid of the pushrods.

Basically less rotating mass = more power.

Actually, the SOHC revs to 6000 RPM and the OHV revs to 5200 RPM in stock form. The specs are as follows for a '97 (the year the SOHC was introduced):

OHV
160 HP @ 4200 RPM
225 ft/lb @ 2800 RPM

SOHC
205 HP @ 5000 RPM
250 ft/lb @ 3000 RPM

Wow, this is the first and only place that I have seen the sohc can turn 7k.

Where did you get the 207 HP number?

Thanks.....

My cousin got a brand spankin' new Ranger. The SOHC engine in it is rated at 207HP.

Ford has changed the horsepower rating at least three times since the SOHC was introduced in '97. When it came out in '97 it was rated at 205 HP, then in either '98 or '99 the rated it at 210 HP but it lost 10 ft/lbs of torque. Then when Ford put it in the Ranger it was rated at 207 HP (at least in the Ranger). They may have changed the rating again when they redesigned the 4-door in '02.

http://carpoint.msn.com/homepage/default.asp" the link will take you to Car Point. It has a research tool to give you full spec's vertually any car made. My Explorer is 1998 SOHC 4.0l V6 and has 205 hp. The 1999 4.0L SOHC V6 had 210 hp, and In contrast the 1998 OHC V6 4.0L had 160 hp
This sort of funny in an odd way, because the 1998 V8 4.9L only had 215 hp, you where stuck with AWD or two wheel drive (no 4 low or 4 high options) and a four speed auto overdrive tranny.

yea, only 215 hp, but ALOT more torque. and by the way, 4.9? what, did they not bore out the 5.0 all of the way in '98? what a rip off. mine is a '96 and i got 100cc more...:D
