I own a 2020 Explorer Limited and a 2017 Mustang Ecoboost. Booth have the 2.3L Ecoboost engine. The owners manual states the 2020 Explorer takes 5.2 quarts of oil with the oil filter change. The owners manual states the 2017 Mustang takes 5.7 quarts of oil with the oil filter change. Why the difference? Is the 2.3L Ecoboost in both vehicles the same?

My guess is that each chassis uses a different oil pan.

also the presence of an oil cool with the Mustang might bring in the extra as well.

The difference is exactly 1/2 Qt. My guess is the mustang has a bigger oil filter then the explorer

Yep, same filter for the stock unit. My Mustang gets nearly seven quarts due to the larger filter (I use K&N HP-2009, which is the same as the Mazda B2300 pickup filter). My Speed3 was the same. I suspect the oil pan may be different. Don't they both have an oil cooler? My Mazda had the cooler on top of the filter mount (I converted it to a spin-on filter).
