Hey Everyone,
I own a 2021 explorer with 2.3L. Would a oil catch can be worth installing now even with 67k on odometer? If so, what brand do guys recommend?

Off subject but at what interval to you guys change Trans fluid?

Thanks

The more blowby the engine makes the more oil the can will collect. I wouldn't hesitate to add a catch can at this point. I don't recall the brand I used on my ST, but it was a direct fit and an easy installation. Any catch can that is made for your specific application would make life easier than trying to retrofit a generic can.

I have been thinking about changing the transmission fluid on our ST which has just over 40,000 miles.

Servicing the transmission is cheap insurance against a massively expensive future repair. I am a stickler for fluid maintenance and over the years it has paid good dividends. At 67k miles you are overdue for a transmission service. If you have AWD then service the transfer case at the same time. Ford's recommended service for transmissions and transfer cases borders on being criminal negligence. Service both every 60k miles and it will go a very long way in preventing a major failure of these two items.

I would say after 60k, definitely front differential, transmission, transfer case, and rear differential should all be done.

I started doing vacuum extraction of the transmission fluid last year. It only exchanges 4L but I plan do it it every year from now on. The others were replaced at 60k.

The last time I had the pan off I had a drain plug installed. Now I do a pan drop/filter replacement every 120k miles and a drain and refill halfway between this interval. The filter is good for a 120k services interval. I drain and refill the transfer case every 60k miles. Brake fluid is done at 80k mile intervals, coolant at 100k miles, power steering at 100k miles and differentials at 100k miles. Oil is done every 5k miles using 10w30 full synthetic. This has kept me from having an engine, transmission, transfer case, power steering rack/pump or differential from failing on any vehicle I have bought with less than 100k miles on it. Several of them were driven over to over 200k miles before they were sold.

I installed a JLT catch can on my 2.3. It was designed to fit the 2.3 explorer. Catches quite a bit of oil and some gas as these direct injection engines tend to dilute the oil.

Thanks for Replies!

I got a quote from dealer for Trans service and they want like $1100. At that cost I'll drop the pan and change filter myself (Just will be messy and done on ground). As for catch can I will be ordering and installing this week sometime.
About how many quarts/Fluid type and does pan have a gasket?
Will be doing Rear Diff Fluid also and was thinking amsoil. Any suggestions on brands and synthetic or no?
Lastly, does vehicle have a serviceable PCV and if so, where is it located?

Thanks
