I change my oil every 3,000 miles with Motorcraft 5W-20 and a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. I work less than two miles from home, and school is only 8 miles away, so the oil doesn't get up to temperature very much.

did anyone else read that some magazine did an oil filter test and fram was rated one of the worst, it filtered debris the worst out of all of them
i kid told me about it at work, but idk if it is true

Frams are typically regarded as crappy filters because they use cardboard endcaps, while other brands use metal end caps. Obviously, metal is much stronger than cardboard. The fact that you would have to spend quite a bit of money to get a Fram filter with metal endcaps send many people to other brands of filters. I personally like Motorcraft filters because they are about the same price as a Fram, and are made by Ford.

Currently use motorcraft 5W-30 and FL-1A every 3000 miles, but will be switching to Amsoil oil and filter as soon as I get paid again. This once a month check thing is not fun. :(

I sure would like to have all the money that the 3k OCI folks are dumping ...

Castrol 5W30 full synthetic & fram extended gaurd filter changed every 7500 miles. 2001 xsport w/158000 mi.

Does the Fram filter have the anti drain back valve?
Last time I checked they did not
Also Fram filters have the worst ratings, yes. BUT if you change it often enough you should be okay if you are a die hard Fram freak.

Its sad really because Fram used to make the shiznit.
Carquest or Motocraft filters are good and still cheap.

I've also read that fram filters are the same no matter which "model" (extended guard ect) that you buy. Motorcraft here

i love the grip on the bottom of them though, i work in the pit at jiffy lube, and they are so convienient

Another vote for Castrol Syntec and FL1A @ every 5k miles here on my newused 99XLT.

I've been using Mobil synthetics in both of my other cars (my wife's '01 Focus ZTS and my '00 Mustang GT) and Fram filters in each for a few years now, with no complaints. Regularly change oil (myself) and rotate tires (others do this) on each between 5-6K miles, and check tire pressure every week. Both cars running really well. Most recent filter on the Mustang is a new one to me--Valvoline Max Life (I didn't know Valvoline even made filters, but there it was at Advance Auto and it was a good price, so I bought it).

Haven't done an oil and filter change yet on the 97 Eddie Bauer V8 AWD Explorer we acquired (for CHEAP) last month, as these had been changed just before we bought the vehicle. But when the time comes, I am going to use Mobil full synth and, most likely from here on out, Motorcraft filters. I had no idea Fram filters were rated so low, but now that I know I am going to use something else.

the handy grip, hahaha I say buy a case of Motocraft filters and dip them in herculiner!! get that fram junk outta there!!!
or

Just use a filter/strap wrench and forget the gimmick black grippy stuff. :)

Has anybody tried any of the 15,000 mile Mobil 1 oil? I would like to see how that compares to the normal Mobil 1 I let go for 5,000.

You guy's convinced me, next change I will go full syn with Mobil 1 5W-30 and Motocraft Oil Filter FL-1A. I should get 5,000 miles with this, less wear on engine startup, and maybe a little better gas mileage. Thanks for all the info.

mobil 1 5-30 every 3k
