Hey Everyone, I realize this is pretty lame, but I recently decided to change the oil on my 2002 explorer sport and could not find the drain plug anywhere. I beleive I found the drain plug, but it was pointing out, and not down. Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

you're probably right, but if you're unsure you coudl always back the plug little by little and wait for it to drip a little and make sure it's oil. or you could check the dipstick for the oil level, drain some oil, and check it again to amke sure it was the oil.

if you can recognize where the transmission is, then you shoudl be able to NOT drain anything out of there. the oil pan is also probably aluminum if that helps, and will be almost the entire bottom of the engine.

someone with your style might want to chime in though

The transmission does have a drain plug, so you are smart to be to do the right one. Many have removed the wrong one.

I would recommend doing a search (lots of pictures on some of these threads), and letting us know what engine/powertrain you have.

Thanks for your help guys, I went for it and did the change this morning, and the only problem I had was spilling an ounce or two before getting the oil into the funnel. Thanks again! I'll be checking this board out to see if there are other small mods/projects I can do on the X

you can put gen 4 side mirrors on your 02. HERE
