Hello, i have been struggling with and oil filter that seems to have been force in off center, i have completely destroyed it and remove everything inside and now i can see the thread coupling where the oil filter screws into, it can be remove using a hex socket, does anyone know the size and also does this loosen up counter clockwise? Thanks for any help you can provide.

what engine ?
I have a v8 sitting in my garage so I can check but if yours is v6, then no luck.

Ok so for anyone who can use this imformation, the hex size is a 12mm and it does loose up counter clockwise just like the filter.

Well done, and thanks for the information.

Is that a 4.0 with the filter pointing straight down, which may be the same as the original SOHC 4.0's from the 90's? If so, you could change that block adapter to a standard thread, which will let you use the bigger FL-1A filter, or other larger filters that take 1-2 quarts. I think that thread is a common 3/4-16 that rings a bell. That's what my 99 SOHC 4.0 has on it, the FL1A is a better filter than the small FL-820S.

It is a 4.0 filter pointing straight down, the filter size i believe is the problem, a water line from the water pump to the oil cooler passes right by the filter way to close, you have to push the hose so you can thread the filter in. Im no expert but i think a bigger filter wont work, unless the filter is longer and not wider.

The 3rd gen's and later do have different components and issues. The FL-1A is the same diameter as the FL-820S, but longer. The 820S was created as a shorter filter to fit in tighter spaces, though there already was an equal sized SAE thread version, an FL-300 I think.

If you do have the space below the stock filter, the FL-1A will fit there easily. It's a 1 quart filter, the FL-820S is close to 3/4 of that.

Ok so it may work, thanks i will check it out, i know that for next oil change i have to take some time, when working on getting the filter out i punc the oil cooler hose, the hose is metal with rubber ends, i need it the truck so i cut out the crimp fitting, got a new piece of hose and use 2 clamps, after all the side of the oil cooler was held with a clamp, the things is the hose is so close to the filter that the 2 clamps were in my way when putting in the filter, so had to put the firter in first and then work around it to get hose back in, so next time i will have to work on that, maybe try rerouting the hose so is no in the way any more.

last thing i would want to do is make my 4.0 need more oil i like being able to do an oil change with 1 jug and not having to buy 2 or get robbed by purchasing the extra quart.... sole reason why I hate doing oil changed on the I6 trailblazer.... 7 quarts? really GM was that just to anger people? and if you swap things over make sure you tell people the second you pull into a quick lube or they will destroy your engine... but in the end purolator might make a filter that is already longer that takes more oil I know people were using one that held more oil than the fl1a on the 2nd and 3rd gens

That is a smart thought. You would have to always be sure to control how much oil was put in the engine at every oil change. I do my own so it wouldn't make any difference to me.

The filter size difference is probably around 4-5 ounces, which isn't enough to hurt anything. But checking it would make anyone think it was using more oil, only the owner would know what's going on.
