Do they help engine performance? Or are they only useful for extreme driving conditions (towing, mountain driving, hot weather, offroading).

I am talking about the "fin-type" kind of oil coolers that fit around the oil filter.

The best oil cooler would be the one that takes the oil to the front of the rad. Uses
an adapter where the filter is located, and
hoses running to the front. The type you suggest
with the fins may get more heat due to the exhaust near the filter.
I am looking into a cooler for my Explorer an that is the type I will be puchasing.
But this is my opion.

I seriously don't think the clamp on type will do much in the way of oil cooling. I agree with Ken P. on the external oil cooler, but these are really only necessary if you live in one of the hotter regions of the world, or you do a lot of towing. If you live in an area that rarely gets above 90 deg.F. and don't tow you realy shouldn't need an oil cooler. In reality the aluminum oil pan used on the 4.0L in the Explorer is proably more efficiant of an oil cooler than the clamp on type could ever hope to be.

In that case maybe I keep the $$ in my pocket for something else.
Thanks mrboyle for saving me $$
