The motor has the internal EGR even though it's a '97. Tag says it was built 10/96. Anyway, I'm using a FL820s and I'm pretty sure that's the size (not a motorcraft brand) that was on there when I got it.

Also, I just noticed the under hood tag says to use 10w30 but my owner's manual says 5w30. Which is it?

it should be the fl-1a. that's i have always put on the 5.0's and 4.0 ohv motors.

My '00 5.0 calls for an FL820S and 5w30, FWIW. If you've got the internal EGR you may have gotten a leftover '96 motor or something, though I can't say much of anything about them as far as the filter or oil requirement.

The early 97 models had gt40 heads, I have a spare 302 like that.

They all take the 820S, they have an oil filter adapter on the block which makes it take that odd filter. Regards,

IIRC the FL820S uses metric threads where the FL1A uses SAE threads. Also the FL1A is longer and it would be a tight fit.

I got an FL820S for my 4.0L SOHC....im having trouble getting it to thread on...should i have gotten the FL1A?

FL1A does NOT fit the explorer 5.0L engine
820S does... keep trying

list of alternative filters for the 5.0L, they are much larger then the 820S, the stock filter is tiny for a V8 IMO

BALDWIN B281
NAPA 551087 or1087 NAPA HAD IT IN ITS WAREHOUSE
WIX 51087
FLEETGUARD LF3315
HASTINGS LF444
CARQUEST 85592
PUROLATOR L30238
CATIPILLAR 311604
FRAM PH3616

Your 97 has internal EGR because it is before the P head engine
The P head 5.0L was 97.5+, 98-2001

I am not impressed with the small size of the Amsoil version of the FL-820S.

And I wouldn't have a Fram if they paid me to use it. Get a Wix. Also Wix is NAPA and Carquest's supplier of their top line filters.

Yes, and Donaldson etc. Those links have many choices, but it isn't clear which are the larger, and of course will they fit. I may do some work there and find a bigger unit that Amsoil makes a version of.
