I found out the hard way also about the old gasket sticking to the sealing surface. I always change my own oil and thought I had just tightened the filter a little too much. (do it myself even though it gets messy at times, cause I can't stand those Grease Monkeys making minimum wage cranking down on the drain bolt and filter so much that they have to be destroyed to be removed). Since then, I've been very aware not to over tighten the filter, but it 's still happened a few times. Done this a few times, oil and filter x3k and with 164k on the odometer. I've never had this happen to any other vehicle I've owned, in the 30 years I've been changing my own oil.... anybody got any reason why? My thought is that the 4.0 gasket is so big, it has much more surface to grab.

The only filter o-ring that I have ever ran across that stuck to my engine during my 19 years in changing my own oil was the factory install oil filter on my '97 Explorer. The first time I change the oil on it, I became aware of how important it is to make sure the o-ring came off. I had oil all over the place. I now make it a habbit of wiping the engine surface off with a paper towel to make sure it is nothing but shiny metal.
