picked up a used 2001 explorer sport 4x4 last week, 4 litre, 4x4, 2 door

there is oil leaking from both struts, i didnt notice any puddles in the drive way until today after driving it 200km on a fishin trip with 3 people and some gear in the truck.

previous to that we had put on 150-200 km just putting around town

seems odd that both would leak at the same time, but its coming from the part that slides inside the upper part of the strut, so its not coming from somewhere else and just dripping along the struts.

any suggestions? bad struts just needed a few extra people and 100lbs of fishing gear to go?

and suggestions would be great, im taking it into the dealer tomorrow morning.

struts... maybe ur talking about shocks?

anyways, if ur talking about ur shocks.. leaking shocks is normal especially as after years of use and up north where the winter road conditions are a little bit more 'corrosive'.

u needn't take it to the dealer to replace the rear shocks as they are very very easy to replace... not to mention that the labor will probably be very close to the cost of the shocks. anyways, each rear shock is held in by basically three (3) bolts.. one (1) large one at the bottom and two (2) small ones at the top.. all you really need is about 30 minutes to an hour to replace both sides. and to make it easier to get to the top bolts, i would recommend temporarily removing the spare tire from under the vehicle.

you should be able to find new rear shocks from a local parts store for well under $100 Canadian Dollars for a pair.

well its less than a week since we have had it so they can eat the cost of the struts and labor :)

just seems odd both are leaking at the same time and i have a 12" round puddle, cant be much more fluid than that in side them looks like the majority should have leaked out over night

shock absorbers, struts same deal :)

thanks

Struts are major suspension components with shocks in them. Shocks are just shocks, with no part in the actual suspension geometry, or support. Regards,
